FDear Friends

This week, the Board of Directors for Friends of Mexico began a discussion regarding the future of the ministry after the passing of Brother George Rivera.  All board members, including Rebeca Rivera, participated in this first meeting.  At this time, we are writing to let you know about plans for the immediate future.

! Rebeca is going to be spending some time in the United States as she seeks God’s will for her in ministry. She has made arrangements for local people who are involved in the Galeana church and the village to see that work continues in her absence.

Using various means of communication, she will be providing guidance to them from here. She has also made arrangements for funds to be transferred as necessary to support the ministries in Galeana.

! During the time that Rebeca is considering her call to ministry, the board, of which she is a member, will be seeking guidance from God regarding the future direction of Friends of Mexico. We will be engaging in strategic planning to continue the ministry started by Brother George fifty-three years ago. We intend to be open to whatever direction God may be leading us and to be good stewards of support that is provided to Friends of Mexico.

! As we move through this planning process, we will be communicating with you regarding decisions for the ministry. We are asking for your continued prayer support for Rebeca as she enters this new phase of her life and for the rest of the board as we seek God’s will for the future of Friends of Mexico. We are also asking for your continued financial support as ministry is continuing in Galeana and as we set a course for future ministry. There is still much work to be done. We also welcome input from you regarding possible ministry opportunities.

Sincerely Your Fellow Servants in Christ

Thank you!

“Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, men will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you.”- 2 Corinthians 9:13-14

George Robert Rivera (1931-2010)

George Robert Rivera, 79 was born on January 15, 1931 in Los Angeles, CA.

He died upon arrival to the land he was called to serve for 53 yrs on August 27, 2010, in Galeana, N. L. Mexico. George married the love of his life, Rebeca Raquel Gan on December 29, 1978.

He proudly served his country, serving in the Navy during the Korean War. George surrendered his life to Christ in 1954, in Southern California and shortly after started his Journey to Mexico. He set out on a 3 week trip and stayed 3 months. Brother George returned to California, sold all his belongings and returned to serve full time in a little town called Galeana, Mexico. While serving in Mexico, George ministry endeavors included arena crusades, prison ministries, sports evangelism, and brought the first Christian Medical Society into Latin America. Brother George loved missions, and had an incredible passion to serve. He was a devoted missionary, husband, son, father, grandpa, brother, and friend. He is survived by a wonderful family that will miss him tremendously and is grateful he’s in the presence of our Lord.

George is survived by his lovely wife Rebeca, son Bobby in Portland OR, daughter Laura and Jake Sarinana of Castle Rock, CO, daughter Laura Christina and Mario Alonso of Walnut, CA, His step-mother, Sarah Rivera of Los Angeles, CA, sister Laura Ruesga of Whittier, CA, two brothers Rudy and Danny Rivera of Los Angeles, CA. Awesome Grandchildren Jennifer and Lisa Alonso, Jaden Taylor, Liberty Grace and Justice Reign Sarinana.

Brother George was a man after God’s own heart and touched thousands of lives around the world. He never spared a moment of preaching the “Good News” whether in Mexico, on bus, on a hospital bed, in a doctor office, mechanic shop, and maintenance people.

We celebrated Brother George’s life with a Memorial Service, at First Family Church in Whittier, Ca, on September 3, 2010. Burial took place at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, CA  on September 7, 2010 with full Military Honors.

“He had so much passion, so much energy, so much love, so much devotion, and so much commitment”

On behave of the Rivera Family, we’d like to say ‘Thank you’ for everyone’s love and support. It’s been a blessing to have had God’s family alongside us through this tough time. We are encouraged daily by calls, messages and emails from loved ones and we hope to hear more from you as we move forward. Even though many of us are still impacted by this lose, we can also rejoice to know that George is in the presence of our Lord and Savior.
